Tips to Avoid Bloating While Flying
Don’t become a crisp packet this Summer.
As we are approaching the holiday season, I thought I would share my tips on how to avoid feeling like a blown up packet of crisps on the plane. Bloating is something a lot of people experience during their summer holidays. To visualise this, think of a crisp packet. When it’s taken to high altitudes, the pressure changes cause it to puff up. Your gas inside your gut behaves in a similarly way, leading to discomfort and bloating. I know I have certainly come off a plane feeling puffy and bloated.
Here are some practical tips to help you avoid bloating during your flight.
LOOK AT YOUR DRINK CHOICES
– Avoid Fizzy Beverages : Carbonated drinks introduce extra gas into your system, which expands under high pressure. We want to avoid adding more gas into your digestive system before flying. Opt for still water or herbal teas instead.
– Limit Alcohol : While it may be tempting to enjoy a drink, alcohol can lead to dehydration, which in turn may exacerbate bloating. On that note up your water intake of the day of flying.
DRESS COMFORTABLY
– Choose Loose Clothing: Tight-fitting clothes can restrict your abdomen and make bloating feel worse. Go for breathable, loose-fitting outfits that allow for some expansion.
– Avoid Heavy Belts or Waistbands : These can create additional pressure on your stomach, leading to discomfort.
THINK ABOUT YOUR FOOD CHOICES
– Skip Gassy Foods : If you know you’re sensitive to certain foods like beans, lentils, or cruciferous vegetables, avoid them before your flight. These foods can produce excess gas, which will only expand at altitude.- Eat Slowly: Wolfing down your meals can lead to swallowing air, which contributes to bloating. Take your time to chew thoroughly and enjoy your food.
STAY REGULAR
– Maintain Regular Bowel Movements : Before your trip, ensure you’re regular. This can prevent any additional discomfort during your flight.
– If you struggle with constipation, I recommend using Magnesium Citrate to help with bowel movements.
Flying doesn’t have to mean dealing with uncomfortable bloating. By avoiding fizzy drinks, dressing comfortably, and being mindful of your food choices, you can keep your gut happy at altitude.
Now go and have the best time on your holiday.
